The School Garden |
|
This design for a school garden includes habitats to encourage wildlife - a pond with aquatic, marginal and bog plants, trees and shrubs, a hedgerow and scrub, a living willow tunnel, wildflower meadow, green-roofed shelter, and nesting boxes for bats, birds, hedgehogs, ladybirds and bumble bees.
“Introducing children to gardening at an early age helps them to understand where the food on their table comes from, and research by the RHS suggests it can help improve academic achievement, behaviour and confidence among pupils. It can contribute to the mental and physical health of children.” Independent 26 April 2009 |

This concept plan for a communal church garden shows a large terrace for social functions leading to a classical labyrinth garden symbolising the human journey through life, with contemplative seating areas set into sensory planting, and a play area for children alongside crop beds to bring the community together in a useful, enjoyable activity. Wildlife-friendly planting completes the garden.
“Community gardens often bring different cultures and generations together, improving individual and community confidence and bridging the divide between ethnic, political and socio-economic groups.” www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/today_in_your_garden/community_about.shtml
